Zephyrhills Fire Department - Fire Safety Tips

Use care when cooking
- KEEP all flammable objects, including aprons and dish towels away from stoves. Never wear loose clothing near a stove.
- USE potholders, never dish towels, to handle hot objects.
- KNOW how to contain grease fires. IF a fire occurs in a pan, smother flames with a lid or larger pan and turn off the burner. NEVER throw water on a grease fire. Don't try to pick up the pan and throw out the grease. The handle is probably too hot to hold and the movement will fan the flames.
- KEEP a fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it. If a fire gets out of control, leave the house immediately then call the Fire Department.
Look around the kitchen
- UNPLUG appliances when not in use, especially heating appliances like toasters and coffee makers.
- ELECTRICAL outlets and extension cords should never be overloaded any time they are used.
Bedrooms and Bathrooms
- NEVER smoke in bed
- ALWAYS turn off heating pads and blankets when not in use
- TO prevent scalding, turn on cold water first, the add hot water until it feels comfortable
Check around the house
- MAKE sure electrical cords are run along walls, not under rugs and carpets where they are an obstacle and a fire hazard.
- NEVER store flammable liquids like cleaning agents and paint supplies near furnaces, hot water heaters or any other heat producing appliance.
- CHECK smoke detectors regularly to make sure they work and change the batteries at least once a year.
- PUT emergency phone numbers near every phone in the house.
